Rediscovering Your Why After Having a Baby

Have you felt disconnected from your sense of purpose since becoming a mom? Are you wondering how to rediscover your "why"? You're not alone, Mama! Motherhood is a beautiful, life-changing journey filled with love and joy. But with this new chapter comes a natural shift in focus—suddenly, you're caring for a whole new person, and finding time to nurture yourself and your passions can be challenging.

If you're feeling uncertain, take heart—there's so much hope ahead. Let's work together to find your "why" again!

Motherhood is often portrayed as when our dreams and desires take a backseat, but that doesn’t have to be the case. The idea that doing something just for you means taking away from your children is simply not true. Filling your cup is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your family.

Before motherhood, we expressed our identities through our choices—careers, hobbies, friendships, and interests. These things define who we are. While becoming a parent does shift some of these priorities, it doesn’t mean you have to choose between being an amazing mom and pursuing a life outside of motherhood. You deserve to embrace both!

You can be a mom and a friend, a mom and a business owner, a mom and a creative. There’s no perfect path, but you can find your purpose and passion. If you're feeling a little overwhelmed or exhausted, now is the perfect time to rediscover yourself.

Here are ways to help you reconnect with your “why” after becoming a mother.

1. Find Your “Why”

Are you one of the 71% of working moms in the U.S.? (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). If so, you’ve likely faced the emotional decision of balancing work and family life. The truth is, you deserve a career that aligns with your passions and vision for motherhood. Ask yourself, what gets you excited to start your day?

Whether empowering others, teaching, or leading an active lifestyle, pursuing something you love will energize and fulfill you. So, what is your "why"? Let’s help you discover it!

2. Identify Your Strengths

The most successful journeys combine passions with talents. What skills make you come alive? Reflect on past experiences, jobs, or projects that inspired you. Take stock of your evolving skills—motherhood may have introduced new strengths that can open exciting doors. Embrace the change, and remember that growth is part of the journey.

3. Don’t Be Afraid to Take a Chance

When you take a chance and try something new, sometimes an unexpected opportunity can come. This was the case for Erin DiNicola when she purchased her franchise business.

Before becoming a FIT4MOM franchise owner, Erin was a United States diplomat serving our country overseas in Vietnam and Afghanistan. She held many posts for the Department of State. As a spokesperson, she set up press roundtables and arranged high-level interviews for senior officials, including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State John Kerry, and former President Barack Obama.

For years, Erin had focused entirely on work and advancing her career. But after the death of a dear friend in the line of duty, she shifted her focus to building the family she had always wanted. Erin married an active-duty Army officer, and soon after, she was pregnant. When Erin’s husband received orders to transfer to a different state, she took a temporary leave of absence from the U.S. Department of State.

Erin discovered FIT4MOM when she started taking classes when her son was three months old. She first became a part-time instructor, then decided to pursue FIT4MOM as her full-time career, officially resigning from her State Department role. A day later, she purchased a FIT4MOM franchise and never looked back.

“Women are the backbone of our society, and FIT4MOM’s low cost of franchise entry and extensive back-end support ensure that we have the tools and resources to be successful as business owners, women, and moms,” said Erin. Every morning, Erin wakes up to her family. She then goes to work, meets many beautiful, strong moms, and shares her passion for motherhood and fitness. She is an example of living each day to its fullest and never being afraid to redefine yourself daily.

4. Find flexibility that works with your life

If you've taken time away from your career to focus on your family, your skills and experience are more valuable than ever. Looking for a way to work from home or find a flexible schedule that fits your life? There are endless opportunities, from writing to consulting to teaching fitness classes. You can find a career that works for you, not against you.

Consultants, accountants, writers and bloggers, financial advisors, designers, personal stylists, virtual assistants—these are just a few careers that can be done from home, with part-time childcare, during the hours that work best with your stage of motherhood.

If you're looking for an opportunity to work with your kids by your side, a fitness instructor for a company like FIT4MOM might be the perfect fit, allowing you to give back to your community, make an income, and be present for all your little one’s big moments.

5. Become Your Own Boss

If the challenge of starting a business excites you, becoming a mompreneur could be your calling!

Amilette Klein is a mother of four and proud FIT4MOM North County Inland franchise owner. Her time in the banking industry also significantly impacted her success. “I spent 14 years in the banking industry and brought so much of that experience to running my franchise.” From leading a team of instructors to handling customer service, her previous roles seamlessly helped her transition into this new chapter.

Additionally, her experience managing finances for a non-profit organization equipped her with the skills to manage her franchise’s budget. “All these jobs, and whatever job you might be in, give you skills that can be invaluable in managing a FIT4MOM franchise.”

If you are looking for flexibility and have a passion for fitness and motherhood, FIT4MOM is looking for boss moms like you! Communities across the United States are looking for brave women who are passionate about their families, communities, and health to open new franchises.
